Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag 2021 // not me being fashionably late to this tag

Hii everyone!! 🀩 Yes, I know, I know. You probably did a second take when you saw this post in your WordPress reader, because what ?? An actual post from Dezzy at The Thoughtful Voice ????? Sounds fake to me :’)

All jokes aside, yes, I finally found the motivation to write a blog post!! πŸ₯³ i’ve probably said this same exact sentence a million times by now…..because being a consistent blogger?? couldn’t be me πŸ₯² ANYWAY, I know it’s already almost the end of July (not to sound like a broken record but hOW IS IT ALREADY JULY AHHHHH 2021 IS FLYING BY), but I reallyyyy want to do the Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag, because who doesn’t like freaking out about books in the middle of the year, am I right?? And technically if you round down it’s still the middle of the year, so 😌 here I am!! pls don’t question my perfectly sound logic ok. I also really missed blogging and chatting with y’all, so I’m really happy to be writing this post πŸ’“

It’s been more than 5 months since my last post (whOOPS), so I’ll give y’all some quick life updates I guess? I’ve been on summer vacation for a while now – I’ve gotten to hang out with a lot of friends who I hadn’t seen in over a year, which is really really nice πŸ₯Ί I start school again next month and I’ll actually be going back to my college campus and having in-person classes which is honestly WILD to think about slkdjflsdf……i literally haven’t learned anything since March 2020 πŸ’€ Zoom University is not it :’) But anyway, I’m definitely super excited to see all my college friends again ahhhhh!! And I hope y’all are doing well and staying safe πŸ₯°

I also randomly found the motivation to whip up some quick graphics for each prompt of this tag, as well as design a new blog signature (which you’ll see after you read this entire post πŸ˜‰) – we love Canva!! I’m a lil too lazy to actually do a full revamp / redesign of my blog, but!! Maybe I’ll redesign some of my blog graphics at least, hehe. Stay tuned!! ✨πŸŒ₯

Without further ado, let’s get into the reason you’re all reading this post in the first place: the 🌟Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag!!🌟

[Future Dezzy editing: omg this post turned out to be SOOOO long :’) if you actually end up reading this entire monster of a post, you have my eternal love and gratitude πŸ˜πŸ’“]

Pie charts courtesy of my reading spreadsheet and Storygraph!!

Before we get started with the actual prompts of this book tag, I wanted to take a moment to “analyze” my reading stats at this point of the year (as of July 23, 2021)!! Why? BECAUSE PIE CHARTS ARE FUN.

Number of books read: 30 (my reading goal is 45 books, and according to goodreads, i’m 5 books ahead of schedule YAY)

Average rating: 3.82 (not bad, not bad…..i’m satisfied with this)

  • BOOKS BY GENRE: Contemporary being my most-read genre…..who’s surprised? Certainly not me 😌 even though I might slowly be outgrowing the genre (where are all my New Adult books set in college hUH 😭), YA contemporaries are definitely my comfort reads – I reach for them every time I finish a fantasy book and have no brain cells left over :’) I think I’ve definitely been reading a greater variety of genres this year, though, which I’m happy about!! And I even read a couple of graphic novels and a nonfiction book (GASP…..it was a book about Internet linguistics and it made the linguistics nerd in me very happy)!! Love that for me πŸ₯³
  • RATINGS BREAKDOWN: I’m quite pleased by the number of 4- and 4.5-star reads I’ve had so far in 2021!! I think that just goes to show that I’m relatively good at picking up books I think I’ll enjoy 😊 Sadly, following my trend from my 2020 reading, I’ve barely had any 5-star reads :’))) Let’s hope that I’ll get at least one more 5-star read before the end of this year (setting my expectations low so i’ll actually meet them lmao)……or maybe I should try to be a less critical reader and change some of my 4.5-star ratings to 5-stars……hmm. what a concept πŸ€” Hahaha anyway, I’ve also had a few 2- and 2.5-star ratings, but I don’t think I’ll ever rate a book 1 star, just because at that point I would’ve DNFed it already. Life’s too short to read a book you’re not enjoying y’all!! When in doubt, just DNF. 😌
  • BOOKS BY RELEASE: I’m actually very surprised that I’ve basically read the same number of 2021 releases as backlist books!! Usually, in previous years, I’ve read many more backlist books than new releases because I read most of my books from my library and the Libby app, and they can be slow with obtaining new releases. But for some reason, this year, Libby has been LIGHTNING QUICK with all the 2021 releases I’ve placed holds on, so YAY. Let’s all give a big thank you to Libby for allowing me to actually read 2021 releases!! 🀩
  • READING BY AGE RANGE: Lol we all knew I only read YA. Let’s move on. ……lol jk, I’ve also been gravitating towards Adult books, and I think I’ll continue to read Adult every now and then! πŸ‘€ But YA will always be my first love :’)
  • MOODS: To be completely honest, the main reason I use Storygraph is for this graph LOL. I love how Storygraph helps me keep track of all the moods of the books I’m reading!! As you can see, I read a ton of emotional books because i need books to remind me that i actually have emotions lol. But ofc, I also love hopeful and lighthearted reads, because I need that burst of serotonin from time to time πŸ₯Ί

Alright, now let’s dive into the prompts!! (Please note that I added a couple of my own prompts and left out prompts I had no answer for.) πŸ’«

Wow, we’re starting off with a difficult prompt huh? This prompt was really hard to choose a book for, and I was about to give into my indecisive self and just pick several books for this πŸ’€ But then I realized that, since there are so many more prompts to this tag, I’ll definitely be mentioning my other favorite reads of this year. So here we are:

A Song of Wraiths and Ruin!! A brilliant, emotional, and astounding West-African inspired YA fantasy that is absolutely deserving of this title: the best book I’ve read in 2021 so far. I buddy read this with my amazing wonderful friend Iris @ Countless Words with Iris – ASOWAR was one of her favorite books of 2020, so I definitely went into this book with high expectations – and I’m very happy to say that it did not disappoint 😌 From the wonderfully developed characters that I would die for, to the richly realized world-building, to the mindblowing plot twists, to the tension-filled enemies to lovers……this book has it all. I absolutely adored how ASOWAR handled Malik and Karina’s mental health in such a validating and empowering manner, especially since a lot of YA fantasies don’t really address mental health a lot of the time. I cannot recommend this FANTASTIC fantasy enough!! πŸ‘‘πŸœπŸ—‘

Soooo I’ve literally only read one sequel this year – as you can see, I really didn’t have a lot to choose from for this prompt πŸ₯² what can i say, i literally only read standalones lol cuz i have commitment issues for book series

But it’s okay! Even though I didn’t like it as much as the first book, Crier’s War, Iron Heart is still a fine choice for this prompt. To be completely honest, I went into this book with approximately zero (0) memory of what happened in the first book :’) (I read Crier’s War in November 2019 and I have an extremely bad memory lmao.) Thankfully, this did not impact my enjoyment and experience of Iron Heart too much, as Nina Varela did a great job of re-establishing the worldbuilding and history from the first book and building upon it! I also buddy read this with Iris (thanks Iris for being the best buddy reader πŸ₯Ί) and I had so much fun screaming with her as we read this, because let me tell you, there were TONS of scream-worthy moments in this book. The yearning, the angst, the sheer tension between Crier and Ayla!! I love them so much 😭 I definitely recommend the Crier’s War duology to anyone looking for a beautiful sapphic YA fantasy with enemies-to-lovers!! πŸ‘€πŸ’“πŸ€–

Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Q Sutanto: Not gonna lie, when I first read the Goodreads summary for Dial A for Aunties, I was like wHAT ???? and did a second take πŸ‘πŸ‘„πŸ‘ Because WOW, what a synopsis ahahaha. A murder mystery romcom?? Everyone keeps saying how laugh-out-loud funny this book is, and I can already tell this is gonna be a wild ride πŸ‘€

The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri: Also known as 1/3 of the sapphic adult fantasy trifecta (the other two being The Unbroken and She Who Became the Sun), The Jasmine Throne captured my attention as soon as I read what it’s about. An Indian-inspired world?? Powerful, morally grey lesbians?? Sapphic yearning?? SIGN ME UP πŸ‘€

She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan: This is also part of the sapphic adult fantasy trifecta, and if that wasn’t enough for me to add it to my TBR, it’s pitched as Mulan meets The Song of Achilles” AND has explorations of fate and gender!! I actually just got a notification that my preorder of this book has shipped, and you best know that I will be dropping everything to read this once it arrives 🀩

Can we all just take a second to admire this GORGEOUS cover?? (Cover by Ashley Mackenzie and Terri Nimmo.) I’m actually in love. 😍 Okay but cover aside, I’m actually SO SOO SOOOOO excited to read this book, I can’t even put it into words. From what I’ve seen in other people’s raving reviews, Iron Widow is a Chinese-inspired fantasy that is unapologetically queer and feminist and fights against the patriarchy. I AM SO HERE FOR THIS, OH MY GOODNESS. I absolutely cannot wait to read this !!!!!! πŸ₯°

I also can’t forget to mention these three sequels (of some of my FAVORITE YA fantasies) that are all coming out later this year!! If y’all haven’t read A Song of Wraiths and Ruin, Raybearer, and These Violent Delights already, what are you waiting for? Stop reading this post and do it now (before their sequels come out)!! 😌

Cemetery Boys, without a doubt!! I buddy read this with my lovely friend, Sophie @ Me & Ink, and it was seriously the best time, y’all. When I first started Cemetery Boys, I didn’t expect to fall in love with Yadriel and Julian as much as I did – but by the end of the book, both Sophie and I could not stop SCREAMING about how much we adore Yadriel and Julian – because honestly? They deserve the entire WORLD 😭 My heart felt so warm after reading this, and I loved how this book had so much queer and trans joy, with a trans main character being visibly himself, which is so so important!! Yadriel’s growth throughout the entire book had me EMOTIONAL omg, his journey in this book was truly beautiful to witness, especially as he continues to grow into himself and navigates his complex relationship with his family. And Julian? Julian is honestly one of my favorite fictional characters of all time now. I adore his carefree, outgoing personality and the way he was always unapologetically himself. I couldn’t stop laughing whenever he was in a scene ahahaha. Agh I can seriously scream forever about how much I adore this book, but to spare y’all from that: PLEASE READ CEMETERY BOYS!! This heartfelt queer YA fantasy will for sure give you all the serotonin and emotions πŸ₯ΊπŸ‘»πŸŒ™

Perfect on Paper was one of my most anticipated 2021 releases (because I absolutely loved Sophie Gonzales’ other book, Only Mostly Devastated), and I’m SO happy to say that it lived up to my expectations, and more. It definitely took me a little bit to get into the book and get invested in the characters, but once I did, I fell in love with everything about this book. Whenever I picked up this book, I didn’t want to put it down, and I definitely was reading this when I was supposed to be doing work whoops slkdjflsdkjd (shhhh it’s okay, worth it 😌). From reading her first book, I already knew how skilled Sophie Gonzales is at creating complex, messy, and wonderful characters that feel SO real. And Perfect on Paper was no exception – Darcy and Brougham have my entire heart and they’re amazing and deserve the world and I just love them okay. Yes sometimes I did want to scream at Darcy HAHA (bc OMGGGG i’m sorry but that girl was so freaking oblivious 😭) – but that just goes to show how human and wonderfully developed these characters are!! (also Darcy was honestly a mood a lot of the time slkdfjs this entire book was highkey a personal attack)

I also really appreciated how this book addressed important issues like biphobia (both internalized and external), prevalent both in and outside of queer communities. It was so validating and empowering to see Darcy fully embrace her bi identity and have a supportive community like the Q&Q Club (or should I say, Q&Q Qlub HAHA). I just really loved the bi rep in this book ahh πŸ₯ΊπŸ’–πŸ’œπŸ’™ If you’re looking for a heartwarming YA contemporary with a bisexual main character and the cutest m/f romance, definitely check out Perfect on Paper!! This book was, indeed, perfect on paper. 😌

I know a lot of people really liked this book (which is very valid!! this is just my personal opinion), but. oh my. The Ones We’re Meant to Find was not for me, and I wish I never found it πŸ’€, I really should’ve just DNFed it instead. (By the way, if you liked TOWMTF, feel free to skip this prompt HAHA because I will not be sugarcoating how I felt about this book.) Honestly, I’m so disappointed about this because it was one of my most anticipated 2021 releases πŸ₯² But this was one of the books that made me question if I was actually reading the same book as everyone else, because I felt very, very bored and confused throughout the entirety of the book. It’s probably my lack of brain cells, or maybe it’s because the world-building was very lackluster, who knows πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ, but I actually had NO IDEA what was going on 😩 I just felt that nothing, from the characters to the futuristic dystopian world this story was set in, was fully explained or developed. The only reason I didn’t DNF was because I heard there was a huge plot twist in the middle of the book, and so I kept trudging on with hopes that I would become less confused after the plot twist……but nope :’) it was honestly not worth it.

Basically, two words can sum up my feelings towards this book: bored and confused. This book put me into the worst reading slump I had this year so far. I feel very bad and sorry that I didn’t enjoy this YA sci-fi as much as so many other people did, but hey, maybe you’ll like it more than I did, especially if you have more brain cells than me (which is very likely lmao). The cover is beautiful though! 🌊

I finished The Darkness Outside Us a few nights ago, and. OH. MY. GOODNESS !!!!!! Oh wow, was this book mismarketed. I know I’m not alone in this, but I went into this book thinking it would be a cutesy YA sci-fi romance with space gays……and that couldn’t be farther from the truth. πŸ’€ Don’t get me wrong, this book was GOOD. And it still had space gays. But it was definitely a surprise because The Darkness Outside Us is not as lighthearted as the synopsis & cover make it seem. I would categorize it more as a sci-fi thriller, because it felt so eerie and creepy at times, and the atmosphere was so suspenseful! And it definitely went to some pretty dark places πŸ₯² Also, this is labeled as YA, but for most of the book, I genuinely thought this was an adult sci-fi because the characters did not act like teenagers :’) This book literally sent me into multiple existential crises (i’m not even exaggerating y’all) and dang – between The Loneliest Girl in the Universe and this book, I am totally terrified of outer space now not that i was planning on going there in the first place lmao πŸ₯² I can’t even say much without spoiling the book, but what I will say is: even though I predicted one of the major plot points (wow maybe i actually have some brain cells after all 😌), I was still absolutely MINDBLOWN and reeling in shock for most of the book 🀯

Overall, this book was truly out of this world ok ok i’ll stop HAHA, and if you’re looking for a book that will put you at the edge of your seat and question your whole existence + the meaning of life & love, definitely check out this sci-fi thriller!! 🀯πŸͺβοΈ

Ok so I don’t actually cry when it comes to books lol i swear i still have emotions though, i just feel them in my heart but no tears come out :’), but Honey Girl got me pretty close to tears. Reading Honey Girl felt like a gust of cold air and a big, warm hug at the same time – this book reached deep down inside me and revealed my innermost fears and loneliness, but also reminded me of all the warmth and love that exists in the world. πŸ₯Ί Honey Girl is truly a love letter (or might i say, radio show?) to every kind of love, from platonic to familial to romantic to self-love. The found family trope is literally my favorite trope of all time, and Grace’s friends + found family made my heart swell with unspeakable, beautiful emotions πŸ˜πŸ’“

Although the writing style took me some time to get used to at first, once I got into it, I flew through this book, yet savored every word of it. Honey Girl is about the loneliness and fear of being alone that we all feel, and the monsters deep inside us that we’re scared to reveal to the ones we love. All of these themes surrounding the messiness of adulthood resonated with me so, so much and I feel so much more validated and less alone in my fears for my future 😭 Honey Girl made me experience so many emotions from all over the spectrum – my heart feels lighter and heavier at the same time. Such an exquisite, moving, and empowering read with the most beautiful sapphic romance. πŸ’«πŸ’“πŸ₯Ί

Perfect on Paper, Here the Whole Time, I’ll be the One all made my heart SO HAPPY !!!!! πŸ₯° All three of these books gave me sooooo much serotonin and I just had a lot of fun reading them 🀩 They reminded me of why I love the YA contemporary genre so much!

I love the covers of The Magic Fish, Ace of Spades, and The Poppy War so much, and I’m so happy I now own them in hardcover/paperback 😍 I’ve read The Magic Fish and Ace of Spades, and can confirm that they are both AMAZING books 😌 I’m still in the middle of reading The Poppy War, and to be quite honest with y’all, I am growing more and more terrified πŸ₯² wish me luck slkdjfds

The Sound of Stars, Six of Crows, and Girls of Paper and Fire have been on my TBR for way too long and I still haven’t read them whoops :’)) And many many people really want me to read SOC which is giving me A LOT OF PRESSURE and i’m scared ahahaha

Let me know what your favorite and least favorite books of 2021 so far are!! Do you love any of the books I mentioned here? I’d love to scream about them with you 🀩

How is 2021 going for you? Tell me what you’ve been up to!! ✨

Hoping your summer is relaxing and enjoyable and full of wonderful reads!! Wishing y’all the best for the rest of 2021, and I hope there are more great books coming your way πŸ₯°

also omg I'm sorta shocked you haven't had any one stars, I thought towmtf was one star for sure lmaoooo

  10. dezzy!! i loved your pie charts β€” definitely inspired me to revamp my reading tracker spreadsheet for next year! you just reminded me that i’ve been meaning to read raybearer/redemptor + ASOWAR for … ages now… maybe next month i’ll finally get to it!

  11. dezzy, i am soooo excited to read from you again! i’m happy to hear that you’ve been enjoying summer and will go back to in person university soon. i don’t think we’ll be returning to in person just yet, because cases in my country are still pretty high, and i can *not wait*!!!! i am so ready to go back to campus, zoom university really is NOT it :/

(also now that you mentioned a new blog signature, i remembered that i did one myself but i forget to use it every time lmaoooo)

i really hope you get a 5 star soon! i feel like 2021 has been a lot better for me than last year in terms of five stars, and i hope i can find a couple more titles by the end of the year!

perfect on paper and cemetery boys are indeed amazing. one thing i loved from both books were the references that both books did to the author’s own countries. i was surprised that i got to learn that much about australia in perfect on paper and i love the latinx/mexican references in cemetery boys too!

i had not heard of the darkness outside of us at all, and i’m surprised to hear is more of a thriller. i think that would be interesting – the only sci-fi books i ever read set in space were the illuminae files series and those were definitely super action packed & fun, not at all thrilling and scary. i wonder how i’d feel about it!

i NEED to read here the whole time!!!!! it’s so embarrassing i haven’t yet!!!!! it’s a brazilian author and i haven’t read it yet ugh!

anyways, i hope you have an amazing reading year & an amazing rest of the summer!❀️❀️❀️❀️

  13. “because being a consistent blogger?? couldn’t be me” I mean I relate too much πŸ˜…πŸ˜… Yay for writing your post though… stunning !! This was such a fun tag to read and what a bunch of stellar books.
First of all, you know I loved Cemetery Boys. Honestly, such a fun read to have with you and the characters were so goooooodd!! I do need that sequel just for the character content. please and thank you.
Oh yeah the darkness outside us definitely looks more cutesy than thrillery. That’s interesting !! It does make me intrigued to read it though !! I sincerely hope to read the sapphic adult fantasy trifecta by the end of the year, what a good publishing year. Also, Dial A for Aunties seems chaotic and that is the main reason why I want to read it !! I will also consider this post a reminder to get to A Song of Wraiths and Ruin !! I hope the sequel is just as good for you.
Hope the rest of the year is full of great reads for you !! πŸ’•πŸ’•

  14. I also DEFINITELY need to read Six of Crows by the end of this year haha. I just read the complete shadow and bone trilogy in June and have been taking a break from the series, but I’ll definitely be bringing it with me to school so *fingers crossed* we both like it if we get to it! πŸ™‚ Great post!
